HTML: the skeleton

Every web page is a pile of labelled boxes. HTML is how you label them.

HTML (HyperText Markup Language) describes what is on a page: headings, paragraphs, links, images. You wrap content in tags, usually an opening tag and a closing tag.

<h1>Hello!</h1>
<p>This is a paragraph with a <a href="https://crooli.com">link</a>.</p>

<h1> is the biggest heading, <p> is a paragraph, <a> is a link and href is where it goes.

  • <h1> to <h6>: headings, big to small.
  • <p>: a paragraph.
  • <a href="...">: a link.
  • <img src="..." alt="...">: an image. Always fill in alt for people using screen readers.
  • <ul> and <li>: a bulleted list.

Quick check

Which tag makes a link?

  1. <link>
  2. <a>
  3. <href>
  4. <url>

Answer: <a>. The anchor tag <a> makes links, and its href attribute holds the destination.
