Tiny, playful tutorials on code, AI and how tech really works.
Most tutorials ask you to read about a thing and then go and set it up somewhere else before you can try it. The Academy puts the practice inside the lesson. You read a few lines, then type the command, edit the code or drag the slider right there.
Six courses to start
The Academy opens with six short courses across three topics: Code, AI and Tech. Each is a handful of lessons, and most take only a few minutes.
Not sure where to begin? Terminal 101 is the friendliest start, and nothing else assumes you have done it.
Practise in the page
The practice is part of each lesson. The terminal below is the one from Terminal 101. It is a pretend computer, so you can make files, move around and get things wrong without touching your own.
The other courses work the same way. The web page course gives you live HTML, CSS and JavaScript to edit. The git course draws the commit graph as you build it. The API course makes a real request to a public API and shows you what came back.
See how AI works, not just what it says
The AI courses use the same approach. How LLMs Actually Work starts with tokens, the small pieces of text a model reads and writes. Type anything below to see how a toy splitter breaks it up.
Real models split text differently, but the idea carries over. Once you have seen it, it is easier to understand why long words cost more, and why a model can stumble over spelling. Prompting That Works then teaches you to ask for what you actually want, and Web, APIs and AI Apps shows how to call a model without leaking your key.
Small wins, kept on your device
Each lesson you finish earns 20 XP, and quizzes add a little more. Collect enough and you move from Newbie through Tinkerer, Builder and Wizard to Legend. It is there to make coming back feel good, not to rank you against anyone.
There is no account. Your finished lessons and quiz answers are saved in your own browser, so they stay on your device and are gone if you clear your site data.
Stuck? Ask Oli
If a lesson loses you, Oli, the Crooli assistant, can point you to the right place. Oli is an AI and can be wrong, so treat it as a nudge rather than the final word.
Start learning
The Academy is free. Open crooli.com/academy, pick a course and take the first lesson. If you want a place to practise Maths, Python or Java after that, Stride is built for it.
